Probiotics seem to be the new ‘hot’ item on the market, but could they really help your baby? If your baby suffers from gas or colic there are some studies suggesting that regular probiotic use can be beneficial.
Infant gas and colic can be very painful and uncomfortable for baby. Colic is defined as uncontrollable crying in otherwise healthy and well-fed babies that begins within the first three weeks of life, lasts at least three hours per day, happens at least three times a week for at least three weeks.
Probiotics, like Mommy’s Bliss Probiotic Drops, are natural microorganisms similar to those found in healthy digestive tracts. By adding them to baby’s routine you could help to build up good bacteria in the gut leading to less tummy troubles like gas and colic. A 2007 study in the journal “Pediatrics” found that giving probiotics helped to keep the bacteria in the gut balanced which resulted in less intestinal inflammation which can be a contributing factor in gas or colic in babies. A 2011 study in the “European Journal of Clinical Investigation” found that probiotics can allow food to move through the digestive system easier leading to less frequent spitting up.
