Has it been 3 days since baby’s last stool? Is baby passing hard ball like stools? Baby may be constipated. Occasional constipation can be caused by changes in baby’s diet and routine. If your baby is constipated here are some things you can do at home to help bring them some relief:
Change Mom’s Diet – If you are exclusively breastfeeding consider making some adjustments to your diet, keep a food diary and note if eliminating any foods or food groups seems to help.
Change Formula – Talk to your pediatrician about changing baby’s formula to one that is a little easier on their tummy.
Warm Bath – A warm bath can help relax baby and get things moving.
Gentle Massage – You can either give baby’s tummy a gentle massage while drying them off, or try while they are still in the tub.
Reverse BRAT Diet – While the BRAT (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and Toast) diet is great to soothe an upset tummy these foods can cause baby to get backed up. If you think baby is constipated try a reverse BRAT diet by eliminating these foods from their diet.
Fruit Juice – Fruit juice can be a good option for babies that are too young for solids. Small amounts of diluted pear, prune and apple juices are great to loosen stools and make them easier to pass. Be sure to check with your pediatrician before giving your baby juice for the first time.
