6 Natural Cough Remedies for Kids

We at Mommy’s Bliss know it’s hard as a parent to see your kids when they aren't their happy selves. Parents want to help soothe their kids but want to make sure they are using solutions and products that are gentle and safe. Here are some tips and natural solutions to help comfort your kids.

1. Rest

Get those ZZZ! Kids' immune systems have to work hard to keep them healthy. In order to let kids’ immune systems recover it is important for them to get enough sleep. Babies may need up to 18 hours of sleep, toddlers and preschoolers between 12 and 13 hours, and grade-schooler 10-11 hours.

2. Humidifier

Try keeping a humidifier running in your child’s room or have them sit in a hot, steamy bathroom for 15 minutes a couple of times a day. Moist air will help open up their air passages, loosen mucus, and soothe a sore throat.

3. Saline Drops

If your child has occasional nasal congestion, saline drops can be a great option to help provide relief. Saline drops are a fantastic tool that causes the nose to contract, diluting mucus and reducing swelling in the sinus area.

4. Hydration

It is important to drink lots of liquids and stay hydrated. If they have occasional diarrhea or vomiting they can get dehydrated very quickly. Liquids not only help them stay hydrated, but warm or cold drinks can help to thin out mucus.

5. Honey

Honey is an age-old remedy used to soothe occasional coughs. Research has also shown that honey can soothe the throat and calm occasional coughs. The thickness of honey coats the throat which can soothe coughing. Honey also has antioxidant effects. Try Mommy’s Bliss Organic Kids Cough Syrup and Immunity Boost, created with herbal extracts agave, and honey, plus added elderberry to support the immune system. Honey should only be given to children 12 months of age or older.

6. Agave

Honey should not be given to kids under 12 months of age, but agave can be a great option for kids 4 month and older. Try Mommy’s Bliss Organic Baby Cough Syrup. It’s formulated with agave, not honey, along with herbal extracts to safely soothe coughs.
