Mom Your Way: The Fifth Trimester - Mom Labels

Even in these blurry, early new months, you may feel like a different type of mom depending on the day. So many new hats to wear & so many new skills we never knew we had.  Think of this as your “Mom Skills Resume” and it needs no padding. You’re doing great and learning so much, any baby would be happy to hire you.

Read more from Yasmin Kaderali’s new book “Mom Your Way” – and spoiler alert – one label she gives all new moms…”badass!” We’ll take it.

“The path you’re on doesn’t come with a map…but once you get where you’re going, you’ll be glad you made your own way."

(The following is an excerpt from Mom Your Way)

The past few months can probably best be described as a complete blur. Some days you feel like a natural mom (what ever that means), and other days it feels like you are stuck in that dream where you are at a new job, maybe naked, with no idea what you are supposed to be doing. The path you’re on doesn’t come with a map, and as much as you might want one, once you get where you’re going, you’ll be glad you made your own way. The confidence you will get from trying, testing, failing, and doing all that again is worth it. The gut instinct you may suddenly feel when you’re like, “Umm . . . no, we did it this way because it worked” will reassure you that you are a badass mom!

Even though it’s only been a short time since bringing this new baby (and new you) into the world, you have actually already started your “mom skills” résumé. What new skills would you add? Don’t catch a case of the “shoulds” or labels or other mom-comparing. That’s not what matters. Give yourself permission to be satisfied with exactly where you are right now.

Now, take a deep breath and remember tomorrow is a new day. What’s a short mantra that resonates with you for this week? Share it with your partner or one of your village people and ask them to remind you of it if you’re feeling a bit rough or hopeless.

My mantra during the first six months was mostly about reassuring myself that I had the inner strength to get through the many challenges and unknowns. I would tell myself, Just be you and everything will be all right. I know it sounds cheesy, but this has been my professional mantra too. I have confidence and faith that by being my true self, which does feel fairly well rounded, things will work out okay. More importantly, I feel true to myself. Even when I had no idea what I was doing as a mom, just knowing that I was doing it my way and following my natural gut instincts really helped.
